Under a Low Sky / Sous Un Ciel Bas

Forty-year-old Syrian cinematographer Jamal is obsessed with the idea of losing his past. He has been living in France for a decade, and is now confronted with so many places from his memory being abandoned or destroyed, and his friends spread all over the world. Jamal decides to travel to different European cities to connect to the people he once knew, and travels into the past in his research covering the period of the birth of the Syrian state in the early twentieth century. Gradually he weaves fragments and snippets of narratives into a reflection of how he can possibly understand the present. Under A Low Sky is a succession of unusual, unexpected, familiar or impossible meetings, taking us to a febrile mood of grasping and losing memory and a sense of self.

Κάτω από Ένα Χαμηλό Ουρανό

Η παράσταση Κάτω από Ένα Χαμηλό Ουρανό μιλάει για την ιστορία του σαραντάχρονου κινηματογραφιστή Τζαμάλ από τη Συρία. Ο Τζαμάλ έχει την εμμονή ότι ξεχνά το παρελθόν του. Ζει την τελευταία δεκαετία στη Γαλλία και νιώθει σημαντικά κομμάτια της μνήμης του να χάνονται ή να αλλοιώνονται, ενώ οι φίλοι του είναι διασκορπισμένοι σε διάφορα μέρη του κόσμου. Ο Τζαμάλ αποφασίζει να ταξιδέψει στην Ευρώπη για να συνδεθεί με ανθρώπους που γνώριζε κάποτε και να ερευνήσει το παρελθόν από την ίδρυση του σύγχρονου κράτους της Συρίας στις αρχές του εικοστού αιώνα. Σταδιακά, μέσω θραυσματικών παρελθοντικών αφηγήσεων, προσπαθεί να κατανοήσει το παρόν. Το Κάτω από Ένα Χαμηλό Ουρανό είναι μια διαδοχή ασυνήθιστων, απροσδόκητων, οικείων ή αδύνατων συναντήσεων, που μας προκαλούν να βρούμε και να χάσουμε τη μνήμη και την αίσθηση του εαυτού μας. Η παράσταση παρουσιάζεται ως τμήμα του Performances Beyond Two Shores, ενός project συγχρηματοδοτούμενου από την Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή μέσω του προγράμματος Δημιουργική Ευρώπη. Με τη συμμετοχή εννέα Ευρωπαίων συνεργατών και τεσσάρων επιπλέον στην Ελλάδα, το project έχει στόχο την υποστήριξη Αράβων καλλιτεχνών στην Ευρώπη.

WAEL ALI, BIOGRAPHY

Wael Ali is a leading Syrian writer, dramaturg and director, based in Lyon whose work has been shown internationally, including at Gorki Theatre in Berlin, Toneelhuis in Antwerp, Journées Théatrales de Carthage, Tunis.

 

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Under a Low Sky is presented as part of Performances beyond two shores, a project co-funded by the European Commission within the framework of the Creative Europe Programme. Working with nine partners, the project aims to support Arab artists in Europe. LOOP is the co-production partner in Greece in collaboration with the Institut Francais in Greece, 1927 Art Space, and KET (TV Control Center).
